Just as Storm Claudia hit the northwest the prior day, Manchester City blew the visitors away at the Etihad. It was a statement three-nil victory for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they consolidated their position at the league summit.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline marked successive WSL losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, placing them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s capacity to balance domestic and European soccer with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed topic since they qualified for the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared weary throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a a few adjustments. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought vigor, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

The hosts, in opposition, have fewer loading worries. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a fitness issue.

Final Period

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- City player Park came nearest, hitting the post, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and did not manage to register a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have extended their lead when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the winning team. Having failed to overcome any team who ended above them last season, City's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to put them in a favorable position after the opening fixtures.
